Rural EMS Development Coordinator Mission

The mission of the Rural EMS Development Coordinator is to bring emergency rescue and preventative medicine to rural communities in Guatemala through partnership with Rescate Balam.

About the Role

This missionary will partner full-time with David Lopez, Director of Rescate Balam, and provide one on one personal ministry to the students of Balam and the communities Balam serves. This role serves as a First Responder and EMS/wilderness survival trainer. The candidate should be comfortable teaching and responding to emergencies — or have a strong desire to learn and implement these skills.

The Rural EMS Development Coordinator will assist in search & rescue, community & brigade education, and preventative medical clinics. They will grow to independently coordinate preventative medical clinics, teach, and become mentors to Balam’s youth brigades. Ultimately, this missionary loves a challenge and desires to see the church grow. Godly mentorship is one of the major objectives of this role. Many if not most of the trainees will come out of all walks of life in Guatemala. This position will provide opportunity to lead by example.

This is a physically demanding role. The candidate should be comfortable:

  • Hiking all day with a backpack

  • Camping for extended amounts of time in a jungle environment and at high altitudes

  • Entering disaster zones to provide search & rescue and medical aid

  • Operating a motorcycle (or willing to learn)

  • Utilizing rappelling gear for responding to calls (or willing to learn)

Additionally, Guatemala has a very unstable political environment so the candidate must understand that legality is an ever evolving event in the third world and should be prepared for changes at a moment's notice.

What is Rescate Balam?

Rescate Balam is a group of volunteers who train up leaders to support rural communities in emergencies, natural disasters, humanitarian aid, basic first aid, forest fires and social work in places where common rescue units do not have access. They do this by training up and establishing brigades in various rural communities.

CEIBA VIDA (CV) is Rescate Balam’s legal 501(c)3 covering in the US but Rescate Balam is recognized as its own legal nonprofit in Guatemala. CV works to empower Rescate Balam leadership by providing training, the help of missionaries and finances to support their work. The missionary will adhere to the curriculum, behavioral, and educational standards of Rescate Balam and answer to both Balam and CV leadership dependent on the activity.

The CV missionary accepts no compensation from Balam nor any patient for any service rendered.
