The Currency of Life
What do I mean by the title? Exactly what is the currency of life? I’ll try and explain what I mean by “The Currency of Life”.
Your currency in life is in actuality who you are, and the decisions you make, how you react to things, and the desire of your heart. Your focus, goals, motivations, and thoughts, all these are your life currency.
Allow me to list a few things before I elaborate further.
Right or Wrong
Greed or Satisfaction
Love or Hatred
Lust or Appreciation
Envy or Contentment
Hard-working or Lazy
Selfish or Giving
Compassion or Tolerance
Teaching or Impatience
Learning or Ignorance
The Bible says in Matthew 6:19-21 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Currency or treasure, it doesn’t matter what adjective that you choose, we are either storing up on Earth or in Heaven.
As we go through Life, we develop traits and our personality forms and grows. As we learn more, we have opportunities to improve or diminish in our development.
Most children show signs early on of leaning one way or another. Personality traits begin to form and many things contribute. Things such as environment, upbringing, and so forth. We grow and make small changes, but most often the core of who we are stays the same.
We make right and wrong decisions based on what we have learned and according to our understanding and desires. We all know many decisions have been made out of personal wants more than out of any concept of right and wrong.
Some folks are never satisfied with what they have and the opportunities presented to them. Many people get into marriages more because of lust than appreciation for the one they are marrying. Some folks can only see what others have and develop deep-seated envy and strife will become the dominant factor in their life.
Some want everything to be given to them instead of putting forth effort to achieve things. Many have no heart for giving and helping others but instead only seek to gain and hoard. A common traitor in society today is a gross misunderstanding of compassion and tolerance.
In their ignorance, people will become accepting of wrong and even of Evil because of a twisted belief that they are in some way being compassionate. Another traitor of society today is that ignorance is preferred over a desire to learn, so much so that it is not uncommon for some to become angry when they encounter a person trying to educate them on a subject they think they understand.
Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
This is the beginning of storing up our treasures in Heaven instead of this Earth!
If we serve the Lord in all that we do instead of serving ourselves in our own interests, then our service has eternal value and is not temporary.
Every single thing, every effort we put towards our own pursuits, has absolutely no value whatsoever in Heaven. All our effort in spreading the Word of God, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, helping others in service to God, raising children in a Godly atmosphere, being kind and compassionate toward others in service to God, speaking against evil and resisting evil, reading our Bibles, and praying. All these have eternal value in Heaven!
Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
When Jesus said, “take up your cross and follow me”, that cross does not mean your burdens or troubles. That cross is to crucify a sinner upon, and we are that sinner! We must crucify ourselves!
“You will never Glory in God, till first of all God has killed your glorying in yourself.”
C.H. Spurgeon
