To The Unknown God

In the temple of the gods in Rome on Mars hill, there were many Greco- Roman pedestals with the carved busts of the Roman gods on them, but there was one that stood alone with the inscription that read, “To the Unknown God.” I fear that many today who call themselves Christians are worshiping an unknown god.

In my years of teaching, it has become apparent that far too many, when asked who God is to them, give a cookie cutter answer; they only parrot what they have heard in church. Very few will give an answer that is evidence of a personal relationship with Him.

The most common answer is always, “God is love.” Yes, that is one aspect of God for sure, but He is far more than that. God is a jealous God, a wrathful God, God hates, and God loves. He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega.

God is I AM! The angels fly around His throne and sing, “Holy, Holy, Holy.” So what is “holy”? “Holy” is the embodiment of perfection in all things—all things are perfect and just balanced for the purpose of God! The Scripture teaches that “God sits upon His throne in the high place and He does as He pleases.”

Knowing this, we can begin to understand that our perspective of what should be is completely unimportant. It is God’s will that is all-important.

For years, I have had men and women tell me they have prayed for this or that, or that they are praying for something. My question are, “Do they believe?” and “Is what they are praying about or for within the will of God?”

How can we know the Son of God without knowing God the Father? To know either, we must know and understand the Word of God and develop a personal relationship with Him. I can meet a man on the street and walk away and say, “I met Bill,” but do I know Bill because I met him? No.

If you know the Word of God, then you gain wisdom and knowledge and begin to know God and develop a personal connection. Through that personal relationship, my prayers begin to become fruitful because of my understanding of God’s will. When I begin to know God’s will, my will begins to align with His.

I have heard people say, “I deserve” this or that, when in fact what is deserved by any and all of us is Hell itself. We are saved by grace, and grace is a gift for something I did not earn.

We cannot afford what we deserve. If we are truly saved, then when God casts His eyes upon us, He does not see the iniquity of our flesh. He sees the blood of His Son—we become like the doorposts during Passover.

Saved by the blood of our Lord and Savior, by the grace of God through our faith of knowing and believing. I have also heard many say, when describing their salvation, that they found Jesus. Jesus was never lost! It was Christ who found us—we were the lost lamb crying out to be rescued from our fate.

Do you really know God? Do you seek His face and strive to know Him? When you do you will learn that God is love and many other things. Example: Do you know that God sent an angel to Jerusalem because of the prayer of a king, and that angel slew 185,000 soldiers in the night that were going to invade the city? Do you know that God asked Satan if he had considered His servant Job?

Do you know that God had His prophet Elijah put 450 prophets of Baal to death by the sword? Or that God blessed Samson with the strength and prowess to kill 3000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass? This list goes on and on.

Jesus did not try to bring the scribes, Pharisees, and hypocrites into the fold of followers. The Scripture teaches that, “God loved Jacob, but Esau He hated.” Do you know God, Christian? Is this an unfair question in your mind? Are you praying to an unknown God?

Most proclaiming Christians I speak to have a sort of “puppy love” toward God, but no fear (reverence) whatsoever. The word teaches the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom!” As I have stated before, wisdom is the proper application of knowledge, and that is useful.

Surely, most everyone has heard, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16, and the crucifixion story quoted, preached, or taught either at Church, on TV, or spoken by someone. Sadly, the depth of this is seldom taught.

The blood of our Lord, through the process of His crucifixion, paid for our souls; that precious blood was the price for our iniquities. We were purchased, paid for by the sacrifice of Jesus.

Paul called himself a bondservant, and that is accurate for all who are truly saved. We are in fact bondservants purchased through the wealth of Christ’s blood. Sin places us in bondage to hell because of the corruption of the flesh, and so a price had to be paid, and paid it was.

So, since I was purchased, I owe a debt, and that debt is my service to the Lord and the Kingdom of Heaven.

I pray this writing has given the reader a view into something deeper than what had been contemplated in their past and given a deeper understanding of God than had been known.

Be all in or get all out, there is no halfway.
