Who Am I Exactly?
I have covered some of this before in other writings, and I will continue writing about it because this is a topic that can be very difficult to get our heads wrapped around.
All we have ever known is life in a body of flesh and so the flesh becomes our perspective (point-of-view) in all things.
Very seldom will anyone in any circumstance or forum teach otherwise. I’m really not sure why it’s not taught extensively from an early age, other than most folks just can’t seem to understand, but the fact remains that it isn’t taught.
So who are we, Flesh or Spirit? The answer is Spirit! We are all, no matter if saved or unsaved, an immortal being. We will in fact be going to live in eternity.
I know as creatures of flesh and having experiences in the flesh, eternity is somewhat a foreign concept, but eternity exists nonetheless!
We are here in the flesh for a time of decision and service, we either decide to live in Heaven through belief in the Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God the father and repent of our sin, and in doing so acquire a desire to serve the Kingdom of Heaven, or we decide to revel in the pleasures of our flesh and serve ourselves through the promoting of Satan and his minions!
Decisions, decisions, decisions, that is what this life is about—good or bad—and both have results, good and bad respectively.
The Scripture teaches us that God formed Adam out of the dust of the Earth and then breathed in him a living soul (spirit). Scripture also teaches that when we die, our bodies return to the dust of the Earth from whence it came. On the other hand, our soul returns to God. (Ecclesiastes 12)
We are children of God and He was pleased with his creation.
The Scripture says that God knew us before we were knitted together in the womb. That being the case, then we were once in the presence of God, and if we believe Jesus is the only begotten son of God we will return to the presence of God! If not, we will spend a brief time in heaven for judgment then will be cast into the Hell designed as the prison for Satan and his fallen followers.
I feel we have a common failing and that is not emphasizing and teaching the fact that we are living Souls and not the body it resides in, beginning with children.
Oh, sure, we all talk about being saved and living in paradise for eternity which is a very necessary teaching, but we don’t put emphasis on the Soul continuously in our teachings.
Let me ask you a rhetorical question, “Do you base the majority of your decision-making with the consideration of the spiritual life or do you consider only the fleshly life?” A difficult question indeed, isn’t it? After some thought, are you pleased with your answer? I think most likely not.
I know for much of my life I sure would not have liked mine! Why? Because in all my church time in sermons and Sunday school classes, I just wasn’t taught correctly of “who I am exactly!” I don’t see me in the mirror.
It does not wound me (my soul) when I get a cut or break a bone; it wounds the vessel. The Holy Spirit does not communicate with the vessel, He communicates with Us the soul, the one who I truly am, and the Holy Spirit speaks in spiritual terms of spiritual things!
Does the Scripture not tell us not to store up our riches on earth but to store up our riches in Heaven? This verse alone should show us all the importance of focusing primarily on the spiritual.
The Scripture tells us to, “Love the Lord thy God with all your heart (our deepest desire), all your mind (how you think and what you think about), all your Soul (your spiritual self), all your strength (putting forth great effort in our spiritual purity), and to love your neighb|or as yourself (being concerned about the spiritual well-being of others)”.
I have said many times to Pastors, ministers of the Gospel, and missionaries that if I could convince the people of one thing, it would be that we are a spirit having an earthly experience and not a body having a spiritual experience!
I pray this writing leads you to contemplation on the spiritual things more so than ever before! Amen
Note: I intentionally did not list chapter and verse like I normally do because I want you the reader to go and hunt up and read the verses in your Bibles!
